4 August 1964 Three civil rights activists found dead;  Mississippi Burning, the film based on the FBI investigation was made in 1988
4 August 1944 capture of Anne Frank
22 August 1950 Althea Gibson becomes the first African-American on U.S. tennis tour
28 August 1963 Martin Luther King makes his famous ‘I have a dream’ speech: “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character”

1 August Lughnasadh - Lammas (Pagan) - harvest festival and one of the Pagan festivals of Celtic origin which split the year into four
9 August Tisha B'Av (Jewish) - commemorates a series of tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people over the years, many of which have coincidentally happened on this day.
15 August Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Christian)
22 August Anmashtami - Krishna Jayanti (Hindu) - marks the birth of Krishna, the most highly venerated God in the Hindu pantheon.
31 August Eid-Ul-Fitr (Muslim) – celebrates the end of Ramadan.
