4th Sept  1957 Homosexuality 'should not be a crime' - The Wolfenden Report suggests consenting sex between homosexual adults "in private" should no longer be a criminal offence in Britain.
12th Sept  1977 Steve Biko, the leader of the black consciousness movement in South Africa, dies in police custody.
12th Sept  1997 Scots say 'Yes' to home rule.
10th September  1797 Mary Wollstonecraft died, she wrote “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman” (1792), whose core is a plea for equality in the education of men and women.
16th September  1932 Gandhi begins a hunger strike in protest of the British government's decision to separate India's electoral system by caste.
20th September 1973 Billie Jean King triumphs in Tennis Battle of the Sexes.  In a highly publicised "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match, top women's player Billie Jean King, 29, beats Bobby Riggs, 55, a former No. 1 ranked men's player. Riggs (1918-1995), a self-proclaimed male chauvinist, had boasted that women were inferior, that they couldn't handle the pressure of the game and that even at his age he could beat any female player.
22nd September 1862 Lincoln issues his first Emancipation Proclamation which sets a date for the freedom of more than 3 million black slaves in the Confederated States and recasts the Civil War as a fight against slavery.
24th September 622 Muhammad's flight to Medina results in the founding of Islam.
29th September 1979 Pope John Paul II speaks to millions in Dublin visit.
29th September 1967 the novelist and short-story writer Carson McCullers dies.   A series of strokes she suffered as a child had left her partly paralyzed. Her novels include The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1940)
